Welcome to

Ames Buddhist Mahasangha

American Zen

Ames Buddhist Mahasangha is an ecumenical American Buddhist sangha (with primarily Korean Soen and Vietnamese Thiền lineage roots). As a modern American sangha, we vow to act with compassion, wisdom and equity, to share resources, and to build relationships that empower liberation from dukkha.  We teach beginning and advanced meditation practices, hold retreats, and work together to support each other.  We are based in Ames, Iowa, but include members across the country.  We hold many of our meetings both in-person and over the Internet.  We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Book Launch Party!

Book Cover

Please join our guiding teacher, Ven. Douglas Myeong’il Gentile at a virtual book launch party on October 2, from 6 – 7:30 pm CT.  His new book, Lessons Learned at a Buddhist Monastery: Hwadu Slogans, describes a powerful and ancient technique for managing anxiety and difficult situations.  You don’t need to be Buddhist or know anything about Buddhism to use this powerful technique.

The launch party is free, but you do need to register at Doug's Book Launch

Hwadu (pronounced wah-doo) is an ancient Zen technique to help the mind work with problems.  When we’re in the middle of a difficult or painful situation, we can’t always stop and sit in meditation.  The hwadu technique can be done right on the spot at the very time things are most difficult.

At the book launch party, Doug will describe the difficult experiences he had in Korea that showed him how useful and transformative this technique could be. You will learn how to do it for yourself, and of course, you will get the chance to ask any questions and buy the book.

Come to the launch party on October 2 at 6:00 pm US Central time to learn about it. Sign up at Doug's Book Launch
